I discovered I always have choices and sometimes it’s only a choice of attitude.
In running, as in life there are always choices to be made. Sometimes, i think life choices may be just a tad bit easier. You know, when your hungry you should eat. You know when you have an itch, to scratch. You know when you feel an urge, to look for the restroom. Sure, i make it sound easy and it is. It’s all there before us, you just need to choose.
In running, sometimes the choices are not so evident. First things first. The weather. We cannot control it so we must control it in other ways. Shall i wear a hat or hood. Perhaps a cool bandana. What shall i wear and does it match my running shoes? Lots of choices there.
Then the inevitable question. Where? Should i run my usual route or mix it up a bit. How fast? Music or no? How many miles? There’s a fork in the road, which way should i go?
Now as you become more of a real runner, there are other concerns. Should i start racing? 5K or 10Ks? Or dare i say it, half or marathons? You know deep down that you want to take your running to the next level. Your so ready. So you settle in your comfy computer chair and look up all the races in your area. It’s mind boggling how many races are happening each weekend, every weekend it seems. So, you need to pick and “choose”, afterall you cannot do them all! Or can you? Hmm, i can rearrange my gyn appointment and do the 10K OR i can go to said gyn and run in the 5K afterwards. Choices!!!
Then, there is the choice of what to eat and when. If you are a morning runner like i am, do you eat before the run or after? Just so you know, i eat after, always after….Should you indulge in perhaps, eggs, turkey sausage, some form of bread or a cup of plain yogurt with fresh fruit. To me, this is a no brainer. You think, hey i just ran 5 miles at a 12 minute per mile pace, dude i want those eggs and to hell with the turkey sausage, me wants bacon!!!!
Choices!! How about the runner that does the exact same thing every single day. Rises at 6.15am, checks email, drinks big glass of lemon water, gets dressed (doesn’t care what, if anything matches) inserts ipod headphones into ears,(theres the only choice, what playlist to listen to) unlocks door and leaves the house. Then: goes to said destination to run. Always goes in the same direction and runs for 52 minutes. Sometimes with buddies, sometimes alone. This is me! This is how i run. I guess i eliminated all choices.
The only thing i am concerned with at that moment in time is running. I love it so much. What it does for me, my womanly figure (yeah right) my mentally crazed mind and lets face it, it gives you very nice muscular legs.
So, i choose to run!!!!
