My running buddies….and then some!
This week’s Take It and Run Thursday is all about Running Communities. Not only does this mean a lot to me, i’ve been meaning to post about this for a long time, so here’s my chance!!!
I started this blog with one thing in mind. To chronicle my running, day to day! That simple. Then i started thinking about the many things that accompany my day to day running. My friends, my buddies, my mentor! A trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person…
I became acquainted with my mentor many years ago. She is a very big part of the runner i am today! Let me tell you a little about her. She has been a pediatrician for the past 36 years, in one of the roughest neighborhoods. Her patients love and respect her, not only for the doctor she is but also for the person she is….lets just say, she’s there if you need her!
I do have to say, that in a way she is a better runner than i am, even though she never ran a marathon and i did. Not important she says. She is happier running on the boards with all of us. Regaling us with wonderful stories about her ever growing family. (she just became a grandma) She loves to debate us on such topics as politics, relationships, the smell of coffee and her love of cantelope! She has a dynamite sense of humor and i can hear her laugh a mile a way!
She has taught me things about running that i’ve never thought possible. Mostly, the camaraderie that happens on our daily runs. Its funny because weekdays we have a set time to meet up on the boards, but come the weekend she and her hubby (who runs also) like to sleep in a bit…so we all wait on her phone call before we venture out for our run. Afterall, its not fun to run without her!
My other buddies are all awesome too! None of them are “great” runners and most of them are slowly slowing down their pace. Sometimes, its hard for me because i want to run fast but i make a choice to be with my friends….
We used to have these amazing races on the boardwalk for memorial day and labor day and those were really fun. 5 miles…i have a few trophies that i am very proud of to this day!!! My mentor, heck her name is Ilene, did participate in these races as did her 2 daughters. One of which is now a doctor, the other a lawyer…good memories!
So, i hope this gives you a sense of who i am as a runner and why! It really all boils down to 20 years ago, as a youngin running alone and waving to Ilene because i was a friendly girl. She waved back, and the rest, as they say is history!
