Funny The Way It Is…

May 23, 2009

Today, I set out to run a 10 miler.  Funny the way it is, that 10 miler didn’t happen.  I sure tried thats for sure.

Samantha and I took the train over to Prospect Park and our plan was 1 loop in the park then out and over to Ocean Parkway down to my boardwalk.  Yes, I partly own the boardwalk because I love it.  So that makes me part owner by default.

So, we completed 1 loop stopping a few times for water and stretching.  All week long I was thinking about whether or not I would bring a GEL or GU for energy and at the last minute just decided on a bottle of water.  Yeah, not good.  I sure could have used some energy to finish the run.  Funny the way it is.

It was hot too.  About 68-69 degrees with the sun shinning.  I was able to drink 2 full bottles of water but that just wasn’t enough.  Once on Ocean Parkway I kept on running and running and was getting nowhere fast.  I felt kinda low on energy and when I hit 8 miles I thought I was done.  Funny the way it is.

I had it in me to run 1/2 more and ended with 8.5 miles for the day.  I will say this though, I have no pain.  No fucking pain in my shin.  How can that even be?  It’s kind of perplexing to me that 3 weeks ago it hurt to even walk on it.  And I had crepitus.  ODD!  Oh and funny the way it is.

I want to share with you some twitter responses I got today from some runner friends of mine:

Don’t get down, you will have good days and bad. It hurts but keep at it and you will be proud of yourself!

Don’t beat yourself up. At least you ran 8.5; that’s good!

Not a fail! An 85% achievement!

Don’t beat yourself up. There must be a reason why. Learn from it.

8.5 miles is a fail in no-one’s book.

So take it easy and enjoy your race. Take walk breaks if you have to. I do. Run should be fun. Right? 😉

8.5 is better than 0 and still impressive to me.

And the one that really turned my thinking around:

Lighten up! Three weeks back you were getting an MRI. You rocked 8.5 and next week you’ll rock 13.1 :0)

It took the words of total strangers on twitter to get me to where I was happy with my run today.  So thank you guys.  I love you!

Lying in the park on a beautiful day … glad you had no pain. It’s 8.5 more than I’ve done all effing week. But you know what, the pain I had in my left foot this week is completely gone. COMPLETELY. So I’m back to some mild issues in my left foot, right where I was a week ago. Running can be so stupid sometimes.

Wow did not know you were having an MRI a few weeks ago! Even more impressive. The heat and humidity are huge factors, and you still ran 8.5!

It sounds like your body was ready to run. I guess your legs were good for 8.5! YAY!! And on YOUR boardwalk no less. I’m headed to the shore for a couple days in the morning, I’ll run on my boardwalk tomorrow. If it rains, I’ll be alone 🙂

    Have a great weekend!

  8. May 24, 2009 3:18 am

on May 30th, I am prepared to storm YOUR boardwalk and occupy it.

8.5 is a good run! and 70 degrees is down right chilly 🙂

  12. May 25, 2009 4:45 am

Great job on getting out there and getting the 8.5 done! Glad to hear no pain!

  13. May 26, 2009 1:22 am

I agree with all. 8.5 miles is great. If you can run that with no crowd support you will totally be able to crush 13.1. Go get it!!

  14. May 26, 2009 1:23 am

Ya’ know — one day, I complained that I had only run like 9 miles instead of the 12 that I had planned to run. Someone pointed out to me, rather nicely, that 9 miles is a very long way to run! Think about it.

Wes — 70° is chilly? To each his own, I guess.

That’s absolutely correct chica!! You got out there and did something and that is ALWAYS better than 0 🙂 8.5 is pretty damn good!
